What is Season Extension

At Four Season Tools we believe in year-round food production. This can be accomplished through the use of various season extension technologies and techniques:

  • Variety Selection - Some varieties are naturally cold-hardy and can be harvested long after frost has set in.
  • Site Attributes - The natural slope and exposure of your growing plots provide a variety of microclimates that can affect the ability of plants to thrive earlier or later than typical.
  • Windbreaks - Protection from the cooling and desiccating effects of wind allows sensitive crops to be grown outside their normal season.
  • Mulches - Organic and plastic mulches can be used to alter the soil temperature and moisture to provide additional protection on the front and tail end of the season.
  • Low tunnels - Simple structures that provide a protected environment for crops. Various materials, including plastic, floating row cover, or shade cloth can be used to offer protection from frost or heat, allowing crops to thrive beyond their recommended growth periods. When used with high tunnels, year-round growing is possible in many cold climates.
  • Caterpillar Tunnels - Larger structures, typically covered in plastic, provide significant frost protection. The larger volume of these structures allow for more regulated temperatures and a pleasant working environment. Typically used for three-season growing.
  • High Tunnels - Providing maximum protection from frost, these structures allow for four-season growing in many climates. Many options, including double-layer plastic, shade cloth, and low tunnel integration allow for maximum flexibility and yields during all parts of the year. Can be heated to provide additional protection for more sensitive crops. Movable structures can fit into existing crop rotation schedules to provide maximum value throughout the year.

Why Season Extension?

  • Growers that utilize season extension techniques and technologies often are able to benefit from premium prices offered in the early and late season.
  • Longer season production provides consistent and extended cash-flow.
  • Proper management can result in more sustained and increased yields for many crops.
  • The controlled environment allows for higher quality products and the ability to manage growing conditions more closely.
  • Provides protection from insects and pests that can damage crops.

Economics of Season Extension

There are many variables that impact the economic viability of season extension for a growing operation. Return on investment will depend largely on crops produced, systems used, and local markets. Movable systems, for example, require a larger up-front investment that is spread across multiple crops each year, potentially allowing for quicker payback.
